Oysters first appeared on our planet about one hundred million years ago and they have lost none of their seductive powers. They owe their fascination to their unmistakable taste and the aphrodisiac properties of their flesh. Legend has it that Casanova used to breakfast on fifty oysters every morning! Their pearls have also given rise to some of the strangest myths: in classical times people believed that pearls were created when lightning hit the sea. Only oysters from the East, however, produce pearls and in Europe they are farmed in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea purely to eat.
